Il progetto si propone di analizzare diversi tipi di fonti metalinguistiche (quali, per esempio, testi citati come exempla da grammatici e lessicografi; termini tecnici che descrivono e spiegano forme o fenomeni linguistici) per arricchire la conoscenza linguistica del passato.
Le ricerche condotte si concentrano, in primo luogo, su lingue indoeuropee che presentano significative tradizioni grammaticali antiche e medievali, come latino, greco, sanscrito e armeno. Inoltre, vengono esaminate anche lingue non indoeuropee, come il tamil o le lingue dell’area indonesiana, che hanno subito, in segmenti rilevanti della loro storia, processi di standardizzazione in parte modellati sugli schemi della tradizione grammaticale europea.
