As part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the Ministry of Universities and Research has planned a Reform of the Orientation system by allocating 250 million euros of investment for Active Orientation in the school-university transition. The investment aims to facilitate and encourage the transition from upper secondary school to university and, at the same time, address university dropouts in later years, helping to lay the groundwork for achieving the strategic goal of increasing the number of graduates.
It provides for the training of 1 million students (starting from the third year of high school), through short courses (15 hours) to be delivered over the next 4 years (until 2026), enabling students to better understand the range of university educational pathways on offer and to bridge the gaps present in the basic skills that are required.
The planned courses have 5 objectives:
(a) to learn about the context of higher education and its value in a knowledge society, to become informed about different educational offerings as opportunities for personal growth and the realization of sustainable and inclusive societies;
(b) experience active, participatory and laboratory-based disciplinary teaching, guided by the learning methodology of the scientific method;
(c) self-evaluate, verify and consolidate one’s knowledge to reduce the gap between that possessed and that required for the course of study of interest;
(d) consolidate reflective and transversal skills for the construction of the educational and professional development project;
(e) learn about job sectors, possible employment outlets as well as sustainable and inclusive future jobs and the link between these and the knowledge and skills acquired.
In this framework, from the union of all Lazio universities comes the Orientamento Next Generation – Universities of Lazio project, with specific regional targets for the four-year period 2022-2026.

The L11 degree program in Modern Languages and Literatures, within the DISTU Department, is proposing a project specifically on languages, entitled: Foreign Languages and Cultures for Intercultural Dialogue in the Knowledge Society: Arabic, Chinese and Russian. In accordance with the provisions of the PNRR, the project includes cultural initiatives aimed at upper secondary schools in the area, with an orientation purpose aimed at fostering the fight against inequality, social inclusion and opportunities for access to humanistic knowledge. The orientation activities will take place in four lessons + one experiential meeting, in which the first rudiments of the three foreign languages and the general notions of their respective histories and cultures will be presented, with a comparative-contrast approach between our cultural system and that of the foreign language presented, in order to foster inclusiveness towards another’s culture.
The experiential meeting consists of an educational outing to Rome. The program is as follows:
1) visit at the Pigorini Museum of Civilizations, to introduce the children to the study of Chinese culture and the importance of the exchange of knowledge that took place on the Silk Road since ancient times;
2) visit at the Basilica of St. Clement, the Pontifical Oriental Institute and the Russicum to interface with Slavic Orthodox culture, with special emphasis on the Slavic Oriental tradition and the origin of Cyrillic;
3) visit to the Islamic Cultural Center of Italy- Grand Mosque to begin to understand the basics of Arab (Islamic) culture.
The objective is to present the value of university education, provide an opportunity to gain experience with a participatory and laboratory teaching approach, learn about job outlets and the connection between them and the knowledge acquired.
The visits are designed in order to promote a link between pupils’ aspirations, employability skills and choice of study path, with a focus on assessing the possible link between sustainability, inclusiveness and future knowledge.
