Brief Description and Objectives of the Research:

The research unit at Tuscia analyzes, within the scope of this project, the urban development of archaic age centers in Sicily. This study involves an in-depth analysis of individual urban centers, attempting to verify all stratigraphic and archaeological data from which hypotheses regarding the structure and chronology of various urban layouts have emerged. Excavation data related to street axes, structures delimiting residential blocks, as well as monuments of the public and sacred sectors of these cities will be analyzed. Based on this verification and comparison among centers, the real extent and consistency of the urban development of Sicilian centers in the archaic age can be described. Within this analysis, significant attention will also be given to city walls, considering their importance for chronological definition, and often for the orientation of urban layouts, which remains significantly overlooked to date.

Possible Collaborating Entities and Institutions:

The project is carried out in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome (PI), the University of Sassari, and the CNR (National Research Council of Italy).
