WineryFarming4.0
ABSTRACT
Wine sectors is one of the most important Italian agricultural activities with revenue of 13 billion € and about 310000 farms making Italy the first European producer with 5.5 billion litres in 2019. Vineyards are characterized by a high heterogeneity due to structural factors such as pedo-morphological characteristics, and other dynamics such as cropping practices and seasonal weather. In this context, the introduction of agriculture 4.0 technologies for supporting vineyard management allows the efficiency and quality of production to be improved and, at the same time, it reduces the environmental impact. However, despite a good structuring of the supply chain with some medium-large winemaking companies and several cooperative cellars, the agricultural step of the chain isfragmented into many micro or small family run winery farms. For these latter, the adoption of innovations and the implementation of agriculture 4.0 principles is critical and still very limited due to economic and cultural constraints. In small farms, in addition to difficulties in supporting new investments in case of low profitability, the age of the owner is often medium-high and, consequently, the predisposition to the adoption of new digital solutions is low. In this context, it is paramount, from one side, to recognize the best technologies for agriculture 4.0 in viticulture but, on the other side, to develop tools able: to identify the farms where these technologies can be effectively adopted and, to clearly quantify the sustainability increase related to the adoption of agriculture 4.0 technologies.
Combining different skills as well as different approaches, the WineryFarming4.0 project aims to enhance the adoption of Agriculture 4.0 technologies in winery farms. To this purpose, the 5 Work Packages includes the following activities: i) The analysis of state of the art about the digitalization as well as the adoption of Agriculture 4.0 technologies in winery with different sizes in different Italian wine areas, ii) The identification of the main aspects of the cultivation practices that can be effectively supported by Agriculture 4.0 technologies as well as the identification of the most promising solutions to be tested, iii) The development of a readiness tool able to identify if a winery can proficiently adopt specific agriculture 4.0 technologies as well as a tool for assessing the farm performances in term of efficiency, economic, environmental and social sustainability, iv) The validation of the tools developed through comparative farm trials and the drafting of a user-friendly manual able to enhance the spread of the tool among farms. In this context, the main project outcome will be the development of tools focused at enhancing the Agriculture 4.0 technology effective adoption with the aim to achieve value proposal in the optimization best practices for water, soil, air, human safety, input reduction and environment protection.
