GREAT: Genetics and genomics of REproductive systems in plAnTs

GREAT

ABSTRACT

In Angiosperms, sexual reproduction is the main route for recombining maternal and paternal genes in the offspring. Sexuality barriers, like male-sterility and self-incompatibility, prevent selfing and support outcrossing thereby representing an effective strategy to maximize genetic diversity. Moreover, an alternative strategy to fertilization, which is essential to produce seeds, is represented by parthenocarpy through either natural or artificially induced production of fruits without fertilization, which makes them seedless. This project GREAT aims to advance our knowledge of the genetics of plant reproductive systems through the exploitation of genomics. Our main goal is the mapping of key genes that control meiosis or gametogenesis, pollen-pistil interaction and fertilization in vegetable crops (chicory, endive, eggplant, tomato and artichoke). Moreover, it also provides functional validation of candidates by using genome-editing systems. We pursue to establish a research network focused on the genomics of crop plant reproduction. The participating groups are strongly committed to the cause of understanding plant reproduction for crop breeding, but would all benefit from increased cooperation within this project.
