ABSTRACT
The increase in human population and per capita consumption over the past three centuries is causing a global decline in biodiversity. The main indirect drivers of biodiversity decline remain the production of food, fuel, and other goods and services for human use, which drives the conversion of natural habitats to agricultural and other human-altered habitats. Biodiversity decline and climate change are thus considered by IPBES and IPCC to be the two major crises facing the world today. For this reason, combating biodiversity decline has prompted increased global coordination and spending on conservation action. The most effective conservation action available to date is the establishment of protected areas (PAs) and, more generally, land management strategies that aim to conserve biodiversity. In this context, Activity 4.4 aims to produce scenarios for PA network expansion in Italy and the Mediterranean region and to identify priorities for habitat restoration and/or rewilding. Given the rapid environmental alterations brought about by land use and climate change, to produce robust results that can support decision-making, these scenarios must explicitly take global change into account. Activity 4.4 also focuses on the effectiveness of conservation strategies within PAs. The activities of the entomology group of DAFNE are aimed at defining the level of entomological biodiversity of old-growth beech and managed beech forests within the large research area located within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and the relationships with recently introduced alien insects on the territory of the National Park.
