Green BIOprocessing for the co-PROduction of high added-value bio-products from LICOrice Root

ABSTRACT

BioProLicoR project proposes a co-production approach, by using both raw extracts and biomass derived from new mild extraction biotechnology, for the development of novel licorice bio-products. The project, consisting of 5 Work Packages to be carried out over 2 years, is devoted to:

1. Develop alternative, mild processes to produce licorice extract and paste/powder, which will be made available for further industrial applications. A biotechnological/green approach (based on enzyme-assisted extraction) will be optimized to be easily integrated into the conventional process of licorice extraction to preserve the bioactive compounds from thermal degradation, also reducing input.
2. Supply semi-finished products to be allocated in the market segments of dietary supplements and high-potency sweeteners. Green fractionation/purification and biotechnological approaches will be developed to produce bioactive concentrates (Deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract) and high-potency sweetener preparations.
3. Valorise lignocellulosic biomass from licorice root processing. The combined use of lignocellulosic biomass from licorice residue together with renewable-based biodegradable polymers, will allow us to obtain a biocomposite, posing a sustainable promising alternative to replace the so-called “commodities” plastics in the food packaging.
