The course provides knowledge on the main energy resources available in mountain areas, with a focus on forest and agricultural biomass, agro-industrial residues, and renewable sources such as solar, small-scale wind, and mini-hydropower. Energy conversion technologies are addressed, ranging from biomass systems (combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, pellet and woodchip boilers and plants, anaerobic digestion) to other renewable solutions.

Applying knowledge and understanding.
Students will be able to assess the availability of local resources, analyze the technical feasibility of different technologies, and propose suitable logistical solutions for mountain contexts. They will also learn to apply quality criteria and certification standards for biomass and pellets according to European regulations.

Making judgements.
By the end of the course, students will have developed the ability to critically compare different energy sources and technologies, identifying advantages, limitations, and challenges of the solutions applicable in mountain environments.

Second Semester 6 GEOS-02/B ITA

Learning objectives

Objectives
The course has three main objectives: 1) to provide some fundamental elements of Earth Sciences aimed at understanding the evolution of the Earth's system and its dynamic character; 2) to provide basic notions for the interpretation and use of geological data available at national and regional level (for non-geological professionals); 3) highlight the multiple hazards and geological risk factors that characterise the national territory. Considering that the European INSPIRE (INfrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) directive implemented in Italy with Legislative Decree 32/2010 has completely changed the management and distribution of territorial data and, in particular, geological data. The course also provides indications on how to use the geothematic data made available by standard OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) services of the leading national and regional geoportals, which have become the main (and often the only) source of information and acquisition of such data.

At the end of the training activity, the student will acquire knowledge of the primary dynamic processes affecting the terrestrial system and the hazard and risk factors associated with them and will be able to understand the terminology and symbols used in geological maps, as well as to have the basic knowledge necessary to acquire geological data from the leading national and regional geoportals

At the end of the training activity, the student must demonstrate that he can perform a search for geothematic data (and in particular those relating to geological cartography) made available by the leading national and regional geoportals and use them to carry out a brief description of the physical characteristics of the territory with particular reference to its geological hazard factors and relative risk.

Through the examples proposed during the lessons and the exercises, the student must be able to evaluate the quality of the geological data acquired or the limits related to their use in territorial studies. He must also be able to correctly cite the source of information obtained to clearly distinguish bibliographic data from his interpretations.

The student must acquire a primary technical language related to the topics covered during the lessons and exercises to dialogue with professionals and experts engaged in environmental, territorial analysis, management, and design. Communication skills will be verified during the ongoing tests and the final exam.

The student will have to demonstrate that he possesses the essential notions to be able to carry out a general analysis of the geological data available (on a limited territorial area) and also to be able to acquire further knowledge. Learning objectives

The course provides a comprehensive overview of existing plant biodiversity, analysed through an evolutionary lens that highlights the processes that have driven its diversification over time. It examines the vegetative and reproductive characteristics of plants, as well as the ecological adaptation strategies employed in different environments. The course promotes the acquisition of fundamental skills in identifying and classifying the main plant groups, with a focus on analysing, managing, and conserving natural and human-modified environments.


Expected learning outcomes

1. Knowledge and understanding:
The student will acquire solid knowledge of plant diversity, biological and ecological. In particular, the student will study the vegetative and reproductive characteristics of plants —including stem, leaf, root, flowers, fruit, and seed — and the corresponding ecological adaptation strategies in different environments. The student will understand the main processes that have led to plant evolution, as well as the fundamentals of taxonomic nomenclature and the systematic classification of plant organisms. Furthermore, the student will acquire the theoretical foundations for distinguishing characters of taxonomic value, with particular emphasis on those applicable for the recognition of major plant families, and will develop an understanding of the different biomes and natural environments, as well as the characteristics of the vegetation associated with them.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to recognise in the field individuals belonging to the major plant families, thanks to knowledge of the distinctive, diagnostic characteristics of each. They will also be capable of taxonomically identifying them at the genus level using available tools (such as tweezers, scissors, needles, magnifying glass, and stereomicroscope) and by utilising dichotomous keys and bibliography. Finally, the student will be able to properly prepare and preserve a herbarium, respecting the appropriate stages and procedures.

3. Ability to make independent judgments:
The student will develop the ability to critically evaluate the phylogenetic relationships and ecological adaptation strategies of plants, formulating interpretations based on their diversity and their relationship with the environments they inhabit. They will be able to consult both printed and online sources of floristic data, as well as for purposes of analysis, management, or conservation of environments. They will be capable of independently collecting plant specimens for their preservation and subsequent classification.

4. Communication skills:
The student will acquire the competencies necessary to communicate clearly and precisely, employing appropriate scientific terminology, the fundamental concepts of plant diversity, including morphological and anatomical features, ecological adaptation strategies, and the taxonomic classification of plant organisms.

5. Learning skills:
The student will have a broader vocabulary that will enable them to perform a thorough critical reading of scientific texts and technical reports, thereby promoting the development of their autonomous learning. The course aims to provide students with the theoretical knowledge, analytical tools and organizational instructions to be able to elaborate, from a systemic perspective and on a business basis, projects that solve engineering problems in the field of rural and forestry construction. Students must acquire the necessary elements for the design of rural and forestry buildings, including the use of CAD and BIM software.

The course intends to help students acquire the knowledge and skills such as to:
- Be able to perform the professional roles of planner, works director and building tester;
- Design simple structural elements within the limits of the agronomist's professional competence;
- Define the planimetric distribution and the dimensions of the various parts of a livestock building and greenhouse for protected crops also in function of partial or total automation;
- Drawing up the energy balance of a livestock building and a greenhouse with the calculation of energy inputs and outputs.

Learning objectives

Learning objectives: The main objective of the teaching is to provide the knowledge required to interpret the genesis and evolution of a soil and its connection to the landscape. The basis for understanding soil formation processes and their relationships with environmental (climate, geology, morphology) and anthropic (land use and management) factors will be provided. The student will learn the basics of understanding the spatial distribution of soils and their temporal evolution within the landscape, by means of practical examples of soil map interpretation and soil-landscape reading.
Knowledge and understanding: The student will have to demonstrate that he/she has learnt and understood the main aspects of soil science, i.e. (i) the chemical, physical and hydrological characteristics of soils; (ii) the recognition and characterisation of soil horizons, as well as the recognition of the pedogenetic processes; (iii) the pedogenetic factors influencing the evolution of a soil and the distribution of major soil types in the world; (iv) the principles of soil taxonomy and soil mapping; (v) the ecosystem functions of soil and the risks of degradation to which it is subject.
Applying knowledge and understanding: The student will be able to use acquired knowledge to: i) describe the main characteristics of a soil profile and the associated pedogenetic processes, understanding the links between environmental characteristics and chemical-physical and hydrological characteristics; ii) understand the location of a certain soil type within a landscape and its geographical limits related to variations in pedogenetic factors; iii) understand and quantify the forms of soil degradation (e.g. erosion, compaction)
Making judgement: the student must be able to independently recognise a certain soil type and the soil processes present. He/she must also know how to set up a soil survey and a description of a soil profile or augering, as well as interpret a soil map or a soil description and analysis data.
Communication skills: The student should have the ability to explain the acquired knowledge in a simple and comprehensive manner, also trying to link the basics of mineralogy-chemistry and soil physics, with more complex topics such as ecosystem services and forms of soil degradation.
Learning skills: The student is expected to refer to the teaching syllabus and lecture schedule of the course, delving into the various topics addressed through the handouts provided by the lecturer, consultation of recommended texts and publications of national and international relevance.

Knowledge and understanding: The student will have to demonstrate that he/she has learnt and understood the main aspects of soil science, i.e. (i) the chemical, physical and hydrological characteristics of soils; (ii) the recognition and characterisation of soil horizons, as well as the recognition of the pedogenetic processes; (iii) the pedogenetic factors influencing the evolution of a soil and the distribution of major soil types in the world; (iv) the principles of soil taxonomy and soil mapping; (v) the ecosystem functions of soil and the risks of degradation to which it is subject.
Applying knowledge and understanding: The student will be able to use acquired knowledge to: i) describe the main characteristics of a soil profile and the associated pedogenetic processes, understanding the links between environmental characteristics and chemical-physical and hydrological characteristics; ii) understand the location of a certain soil type within a landscape and its geographical limits related to variations in pedogenetic factors; iii) understand and quantify the forms of soil degradation (e.g. erosion, compaction)
