ABSTRACT

The Italian olive sector faces significant challenges related to production and sustainability due to rising demand for extra virgin olive oil (EVO) and the spread of new pests and diseases, exacerbated by global climate change. The “Piano di Settore Olivicolo Oleario 2016” includes Measure A.2., which supports the modernization of olive groves through restructuring, replanting, and the development of high-density orchards. A substantial increase in the production of high-quality trees by the olive nursery sector is necessary, to meet the demands of new semi intensive and intensive orchards. The Xylella outbreak has further highlighted the urgent need for ex situ conservation strategies. In response, the ‘SO-live’ project focuses on developing techniques for micropropagation, in vitro slow growth storage (SGS), and cryopreservation (CP) to enhance the mass production of high-quality trees and the conservation of olive germplasm over the medium and long term. The project is structured into four interconnected working packages (WP): WP1 improves micropropagation techniques for selected genotypes and local cultivars; WP2 develops effective methods for medium- and long-term preservation of olive tissues at low and cryogenic temperatures; WP3 investigates the biochemical stress responses of plant tissues during conservation; and WP4 manages the project and disseminates its findings. The dissemination efforts will engage various stakeholders, including private SMEs and public institutions, to raise awareness about plant material quality, nursery production, biodiversity conservation, and valorization. The proposal promotes a collaborative, multi-actor approach, involving four Italian institutions and SMEs to achieve the project’s objectives and implement practical outcomes.
