The Wood Science and Technology laboratory aims to deepen scientific and technological knowledge for the sustainable valorisation of wood and to respond to the needs of the territory (Institutions, Local Authorities and Companies).

Specifically, the properties of wood are studied, even in work or as a component of artifacts of historical and artistic interest, the characteristics of wood degradation both by organisms and environmental factors using colour and chemical characteristics as monitoring systems. The applications also concern the study of deadwood both in natural and semi-natural forest environments and in plantations.

The laboratory is equipped for the preparation of specimens, including non-standardized measurements, scales, ovens, a machine for the analysis of mechanical characteristics; and accelerated aging; it uses equipment for the incineration, conditioning and treatment of specimens.

It is equipped with both field and laboratory instrumentation for the estimation of the age of trees from historic gardens, urban environments or forest systems. It also has a collection of correctly identified wooden specimens of Italian, European and non-European species.

It is an environment with modern scientific equipment used to carry out both research and teaching activities (internships, placements, final papers, degree theses, doctoral theses). It also welcomes students for practical or applied lessons.

It is currently located in the basement of DAFNE.
