ERASMUS+
International Credit Mobility
The main objective of the Erasmus+ program is to promote the internationalization of higher education institutions through international project actions and individual mobility of students and staff, both outgoing and incoming, with institutions in Programme Countries or Partner Countries.
Specifically, Key Action 1 – Individual Mobility for Learning Purposes, allows students and recent graduates to improve their education and career prospects in a foreign country and offers teaching and administrative staff the opportunity to improve or enhance learning and teaching methods, as well as diversify and update their skills.
Within Key Action 1, a specific action called International Credit Mobility (ICM – KA107) has been in place since 2015, offering students and teaching and administrative staff the opportunity to undertake international mobility beyond European borders, opening participation to the so-called Partner Countries.
This action has been renewed in the new 2021/2027 program under the name KA171 – International mobility involving third countries not associated with the program.
The aim of this action is to promote the internationalization of higher education, enhance the attractiveness of European universities, and expand the range of possible mobility destinations by opening up to countries from the rest of the world.
The experience gained so far by the Office of Mobility and International Cooperation has identified some key aspects/criticalities for the successful outcome of the project:
Realizable Activities
KA171 includes the following types of activities:
For students, a combined mobility for study and internship can be provided for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12 months. For teaching staff, a combined teaching/training mobility can be provided, in which case the minimum number of teaching hours is reduced by 50%.
Student and staff mobility can take place in any disciplinary area.
For each cycle of study (bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctoral/specialization), each student can benefit from a maximum of 12 months of Erasmus+ international mobility for study/internship abroad, or 24 months in the case of single-cycle degree courses.
Target Groups
Students enrolled in a single-cycle degree, first cycle (bachelor’s degree or equivalent), or second cycle (master’s degree or equivalent), as well as third cycle students (doctoral candidates, specialists), can undertake a study mobility from the first year of studies at higher education institutions in a Partner Country, provided it is different from the country of the home higher education institution and the country in which the student resides during their studies.
Additionally, students enrolled in a higher education institution can undertake an internship period in a Partner Country organization/entity from the first year of studies.
For recent graduates, the selection by the home higher education institution must occur during the final year of study, and the internship abroad must be completed within one year of graduation. Mobility for internships for recent graduates counts towards the 12 months of possible mobility during their last cycle of study.
For both types of mobility (study and internship), students must sign the individual mobility agreement and the Learning/Training Agreement before departure.
Eligible for mobility for teaching:
Teaching/research staff employed by a higher education institution based in a Programme Country or Partner Country.
The mobility period can also be intended for Training activities for skills update or combined Teaching/Training activities.
Before departure, teachers must sign the individual mobility agreement and the Mobility Agreement for Teaching.
Eligible for mobility to update their skills (staff training):
Staff employed at a higher education institution based in a Programme Country or Partner Country.
The host organization must be:
Before departure, the staff must sign the individual mobility agreement and the Mobility Agreement for Training.
Individual participants cannot directly apply for a mobility grant; instead, Universities/Higher Education Institutions can apply by submitting their application within the annual call published by the European Commission.
The University of Tuscia, through the Office of Mobility and International Cooperation, submits its application for KA171 within the deadline set by the call, based on expressions of interest received from teachers.
The application, unique for the entire University, consists of one or more Country projects. It is evaluated by the Erasmus+ INDIRE National Agency according to criteria set by the European Commission and common to all national agencies of participating countries.
The entire application or one or more Country projects may be funded, even with a possible reduction in the requested budget at the presentation stage.
Outgoing student and staff mobility occurs within the funded projects based on specific calls issued by the Office of Mobility and International Cooperation.
The 2024 Call is published on the Erasmus+ Indire National Agency website – application deadline: February 20, 2024.
