Laboratory of Nutritional Analysis and Research of Contaminants in Feedstuffs and Products of Animal Origin

The Laboratory for the Feedstuff Analysis is equipped with state-of-the-art scientific equipment used for both research and educational activities. In recent years, the laboratory has invested in the purchase of increasingly efficient and precise equipment, ensuring the safety and health of the operators. This equipment allows for nutritional analyses and the detection of contaminants in feedstuffs and animal-derived products.

• The analyses (trough standard methods and FT-NIR) aim at evaluating whether the diet quality meets the nutritional needs of farm animals, with the goal of improving their well-being and sustainability.
• The main analyses focus on the determination of chemical components, such as proteins, fats, starch, fibers, ashes, and dry matter in feeds, as well as the assessment of physical components using the sieve developed by Penn State University. Additionally, apparent digestibility is evaluated. The techniques and the methods used comply with AOAC standards.
• In the context of precision feeding, innovative portable tools are being tested that allow for the evaluation of ration quality directly on the farm, utilizing NIRS (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) to reduce environmental impact and waste generated by current analysis techniques.

The laboratory is open to student training and preparation through internships, training programs, final projects, and theses. Moreover, it promotes collaborations with internal and external groups affiliated with the University of Tuscia.
