ABSTRACT
Beneficial microorganisms are increasingly used in modern agriculture with significant benefits on yields and sustainability of the agricultural system. However, the introduction of non-indigenous species as bioinocules can result in their uncontrolled spread and effects on endemic microbial species that are difficult to analyze. In this project, we aim to develop a protocol based on third-generation DNA sequencing systems (Oxford Nanopore Technology, ONT) for tracking, quantification and monitoring in soil of beneficial bioinocules. A MinION portable DNA sequencer will be used to assess, by innovative metagenomic methods, the persistence in agricultural soils of an introduced fungus and the effects on bacterial and fungal communities endemic to the cultivated soil. Also by means of ONT technology, the effects of bioinoculation on gene expression of a model crop (processing tomato) will be evaluated.
