Bridging the gap between biotechnology and industry: integrating design thinking and flipped learning

ABSTRACT

‘Fllipped learning’ is a teaching methodology that aims to make school time more productive and functional with respect to the needs of society in the information era. It is considered a sub-type of blended learning, and its distinguishing feature is to feed the students with information (mainly video contents) before the actual course delivery starts. This model is very useful especially for upper-level students since their knowledge accumulation enables them to adapt to self-directed learning. Through flipped learning, students turn into active learners who receive information before the course and boost up their higher-order thinking skills.

BIOTE(A)CH aims to integrate ‘design thinking’ and ‘flipped learning’ to ensure students keep being active during the learning processes. The design thinking approach focuses on developing innovations with superior solutions, lower risks and costs of change and employee buy-in. Therefore, supporting in innovation development willingly is one of the most critical factors for employees to develop innovations. Design thinking encourages active involvement in innovation development and immerses students in the processes through its application steps, that is why it is considered “a working approach to innovation development”.

BIOTE(A)CH gives therefore the priority to contribute to improving the employment potentials of undergraduates and to create a curriculum by using design thinking that enhances the transition from higher education to the labor market in agricultural biotechnology in connection to recent technological achievements and to develop teaching materials supporting the course delivery designed with flipped learning.
