ABSTRACT
The agri-food industries generate significant quantities of by-products, often considered waste, which in reality contain significant quantities and varieties of compounds which, if appropriately extracted/purified and treated, can be exploited in various industrial sectors. Their exploitation generates not only an economic advantage (due to the availability of new commercial products and the lack of disposal costs), but also social, environmental and image advantages linked to the greater sustainability of agro-industrial production and the development of new related industries capable of generate new jobs. From this perspective, the development of innovative processes and technologies for the valorisation of the fractions of agro-industrial by-products appears to be a promising path of development for an area rich in “raw materials”. The project aims to integrate the skills of research institutions and companies with the needs of representatives of the agro-industrial sector and related industries with core businesses in agro-pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and textiles. The project partnership will be engaged in the development of innovative processes for the pre-treatment, extraction/separation and valorisation of agro-industrial waste, using a ‘cascade’ biorefinery approach to obtain bioactive compounds, chemicals and materials. In the perspective of a circular bioeconomy based on “Zero Waste” processes, transformation residues/by-products will be converted into energy carriers (e.g. biomethane) and products for agriculture (e.g. soil improvers, biostimulants). Finally, the economic and environmental sustainability of the identified supply chains will be assessed and some business cases will be developed for the products obtained.
