SPICE
ABSTRACT
The prevalence of diabetes is constant rising worldwide and it is estimated to reach over 300 million cases by 2030. Despite significant progress made with the use of oral antidiabetic agents, current treatments are far from perfect and the search for new alternatives is more important than ever. The main objective of SPICE is to enhance the nutraceutical-antidiabetic potential of sumac fruits (Rhus coriaria), a large erect shrub that grows wild in Sicily mainly on marginal lands and cultivated in the Middle East for the production of a spice also called sumac, obtained from dried drupes. A detailed phytochemical characterization will be associated with specific biological mechanisms involved in the modulation of glycemic regulation, to identify specific classes of phenolic compounds responsible for these activities, also trying to clarify their synergistic effects.
