Photographic Laboratory – Graphic and Photographic Recording and Documentation Laboratory

The Laboratory, established in 1990 within the Faculty of Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of Tuscia, has been operational since 1995 in its current location, located in the basement of the Riello Campus – Lotto V (Cultural Heritage Building). Since November 2015, it has been part of DISTU and is directed by Dr. Giuseppe Romagnoli.

The Laboratory carries out educational activities and supports research in the archaeological sector, specifically focusing on graphic and photographic documentation of objects, monuments, archaeological sites, and contexts; archaeological and topographic surveying; production of archaeological cartography using digital photogrammetric systems; cataloging and studying archaeological finds; and creating databases and information systems.

The Laboratory houses a Photographic Archive, consisting of a rich collection of both historical and recent aerial images of the national territory and numerous images of Italian archaeological sites, as well as a Cartographic Archive, which includes the complete series of maps from the Military Geographic Institute, the Geological Map of Italy, land use maps, and nautical charts from the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy. The collections, currently being digitized, are available for consultation by students and scholars. The Laboratory also hosts a Comparative Zooarchaeological Collection, which is used both in educational and seminar activities and in research on the study of fauna from various archaeological sites.
