The excavation project of the city walls of Erice, conducted in agreement with the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity of the Sicily Region, is initiated with a dual objective: firstly, a chronological one, to define as accurately as possible the dating of the various construction phases, and secondly, a topographical one, considering that reconstructing the path of the walls on the other sides would provide significant data about the real extension of the city itself and its probable variations over time.
Possible Collaborating Entities and Institutions: The project is carried out in collaboration with the Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Freien Universität Berlin.
Type of Funding and Call:
The project was funded by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung and the Excellence Cluster TOPOI: Formation and Transformation of Space and Knowledge in Ancient Civilizations (Freie Universität Berlin); from 2020, the project has been financed with funds from Prin 2017.
