The Regents of the University of California, UC Berkeley, Anthropology Department – Berkeley, California).
Harrison, University of Chicago – University of Toronto).
English version
The FoodStore project aims at defining the relationship between storage practices in traditional societies, ecological and social conditions. It investigates food storage systems in the Northern Fertile Crescent (western inner Syria, south eastern Türkiye, and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq) during the late fifth, fourth and third millennia BC. During these millennia, complex societies and early states emerged, and the storage of food staples was crucial to their development.
The main object of the research is the direct investigation of storage facilities from key archaeological sites in Türkiye and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. These features will be investigated through a combination of traditional macro-archaeological methods with micro-archaeological techniques from applied geological, chemical, and biological disciplines: microstratigraphy, Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy, and phytolith analysis. FoodStore also aims to strengthen the contribution of archaeology to debates around major topics such as food security, sustainability, risk management strategies, and inequality. This is done by using a theoretical framework that brings together archaeology, anthropology and natural sciences applied to archaeology. At the same time, the project contributes to enhance the relevance of archaeology to support the development of communicative systems about the traditional rural heritage and food management practices.
The project is developed by Dr Valentina Tumolo under the supervision of Prof. Gian Maria Di Nocera (Tuscia University, Department of Humanistic Sciences, Communication and Tourism – DISUCOM) and Prof. Lisa Maher (The Regents of the University of California – University of California, Berkeley, Anthropology Department). The research period includes a secondment at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain (Department of Humanities) under the supervision of Prof. Carla Lancelotti. The project benefits of the collaboration with Prof. Ulderico Santamaria and Dr Giorgia Agresti (Laboratory ‘Michele Cordaro’, Diagnostics and Materials Science – DEIM).
The archeological sites included in the project are: Arslantepe (Malatya, Türkiye; director: Prof. F. Balossi Restelli, Sapienza University of Rome); Aliawa and Tell Helawa (Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq; director: Prof. L. Peyronel, University of Milan); Tell Tayinat (Hatay, Türkiye; director: Prof. T.P. Harrison, University of Chicago – University of Toronto).
