DAFNE DEPARTMENT COLLECTIONS

A fascinating collection of scientific samples and models is hosted in a dedicated room in the DAFNE Department. In the educational collections room, diverse agricultural and forestry topics are represented: 70 models of breeding fruit trees, a botanical collection of 23 models of plants and their organs such as flowers, fruits, leaves etc.; an educational herbarium composed of 280 specimens of dried plants; an entomological collection with five models of mouthparts of insects and an insect collection consisting of a number of entomological boxes; a collection of comparative anatomy made up of 10 anatomical samples; a zoological collection with numerous formaldehyde samples; and a small collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils. The collection is located on the ground floor of the former Faculty of Agriculture; the room is equipped with cabinets, counters, and a large number of microscopes that can be used by the students for practical activities and training. On request, it may be open to the public. The DAFNE Department also preserves other interesting scientific materials, available for the needs of students and researchers, including a collection of seeds of cultivated herbaceous species, a collection of continental carbonate deposits (travertines, calcareous tufa, and speleothems), and a large collection of rocks used for the laboratory practice within geology courses. Finally, at the educational-experimental farm ‘Nello Lupori’ there is an educational pomarium with a repertory of woody fruit crop, a field collection that includes numerous accessions of rare vines vinestocks, a germplasm bank of poplar species, and a rabbit farm where the ‘Leprino di Viterbo’ breed is kept.
