Jean Monnet Chairs aim to:

  • enhance teaching in European Union studies as part of the curriculum of a higher education institution;
  • provide in-depth instruction on European issues in fields that are increasingly in demand on the labor market.

Jean Monnet Chairs are also encouraged to make use of open educational resources and activities to increase the flexibility and accessibility of learning.

    Description: The project aims to foster academic dialogue, engage students and practitioners, and produce high-quality research on how the principles of territoriality, sovereignty, and solidarity are being reshaped to fit the EU’s legal, institutional, and cultural space, as well as its external relations.

    The spatial identity of the EU is examined at the intersection of three analytical strands:
    (i) the conceptualisation of European territory as a unique geographical, legal, and political space;
    (ii) the emergence of European sovereignty at the crossroads between the national model of sovereignty and the supranational archetype of normative power;
    (iii) the evolution of European solidarity as a multi-layered principle reshaping relations between Member States, third countries, and European citizens.

    By focusing on these three areas, the Chair aims to foster a wider understanding of the EU’s spatial identity and to tailor its research, teaching, and outreach activities to the needs of its target audiences, with a strong emphasis on academic and democratic engagement.

    Building on a solid network established through previous projects and collaborations, the Chair will promote civic participation by involving local schools, citizens, institutions, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders in activities at the Università degli Studi della Tuscia and across the Lazio region of Italy. The Chair will also foster academic mobility, guest lectures, doctoral seminars, intensive courses, a legal clinic, and conferences at UNITUS’s Department of Legal, Social and Educational Sciences (DIKE), as well as at partner institutions.
