E-Lab “Equality in Theory and Action: Towards a Non Discrimination and Equality Law Legal Clinic”

Responsible: Prof. Barbara Giovanna Bello

The E-Lab “Equality in Theory and Action: Towards a Non Discrimination and Equality Law Legal Clinic”, which pertains to the other training activities related to the Philosophy of Law course, is a module within the broader international Equality Law program, coordinated by the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law (BCCE), University of California, Berkeley (U.S.) and Portsmouth Law School (U.K.) since a.y. 2021/2022. The program began in the 2021/2022 academic year as a long-term follow-up to the first international “Covid-19 and Global Inequalities” course, organized during the pandemic in the 2020/2021 academic year. Unitus has been part of the project since a.y. 2024-2025. The E-Lab, based on innovative teaching methods, is conducted entirely online.

From the second edition onwards (a.y. 2025-2026), the E-Lab has also been conducted in collaboration with the Equality for All Academic Action Alliance – Global Academic Alliance in Support of Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Legislation, an international network promoted by the BCCE and the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) launched in July 2025 on the occasion of the twelfth Annual Meeting of the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law (BCCE). The Department of Legal, Social and Educational Sciences was admitted to this network, through the E-Lab, in November 2025 (ref. Barbara Giovanna Bello).

The E-Lab aims to delve into the theoretical and practical aspects of equality/inequalities, differences, and non-discrimination in various social contexts and legal systems from, also in an intersectional perspective. The perspective approach adopted is of law-in action. Students will have the opportunity to engage in discussions, in English, with peers, faculty members, and experts from different universities, enhancing their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical issues and to develop legal arguments “in context”.

This initiative is part of the Other Training Activities and has allowed students to earn 6 credits in a.y. 2024/2025 and 8 credits in 2025/2026.
