Spazio SMA Museum

The Spazio SMA Museum was inaugurated on July 17, 2015, within the ancient Chapter Hall and the Monks’ Choir, once part of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria in Gradi, now home to the Rectorate of the University of Tuscia.
The three large rooms have been designed to present a completely new educational and museum itinerary: a journey that aims not only to showcase the contents of SMA’s collections and museums, but also to offer a different perspective on academic research.
The museum setup was conceived as a moment of reflection on current trends in scientific thinking, aiming to overcome the division between various fields—an approach that finds clear expression at the University of Tuscia, where strong interdisciplinarity often leads to fruitful moments of exchange and integration in both research and teaching. This is reflected in the path through various collections, in the use of images and videos, and in the blend of real and virtual objects.
In 2023, the exhibition was enriched by an important new element: “In Search of Narrating Traces”, a museum tour based on listening and touch—an immersive experience that allows for the understanding of the themes and artifacts on display “with eyes closed.”
Fifteen QR codes placed along the museum path link to multimedia files that include both audio narration and videos in Italian Sign Language (LIS) with subtitles.
The project aims to offer a museum experience that is equally fulfilling and as inclusive as possible for every individual, regardless of sensory impairment.
