Erasmus+ BESTNATURE: learn to protect nature with the DEB

The Department of Ecological and Biological Sciences (DEB) informs all university students about the BESTNATURE online courses, featuring asynchronous lessons delivered through innovative teaching tools on topics related to nature conservation and biodiversity monitoring in different environments, from forests to freshwater systems.

Funded by the Erasmus+ program, the BESTNATURE project — “Boosting EU Biodiversity Strategy by empowering higher education curricula and green skills for NATURE protection and restoration” — aims to contribute to environmental sustainability goals, with a focus on the European Biodiversity Strategy, through dedicated training for university students and the creation of an expert network.

The project was developed through collaboration between Italian, Austrian, and German partners and offers a blended learning format that combines an online theoretical course on Moodle (3 ECTS credits) with a Fieldweek on nature conservation and biodiversity monitoring (3 ECTS credits). The courses are offered at three levels: Beginner, Advanced, and Expert, designed respectively for bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students in scientific disciplines. Students from humanities and language departments, even if enrolled in a master’s program, are advised to register for the Beginner level.

The courses also include an online test, the “Mock Exam,” which allows students to prepare for the in-person written exam of the theoretical course “Theory and application in biodiversity conservation,” required to obtain the Erasmus+ certification worth 3 ECTS credits.

After passing the theoretical module exam, students may apply for selection to participate in the next two Fieldweeks, scheduled for spring 2026 in Italy and autumn 2026 in Germany, during which participants will spend a week in national parks experiencing modern biodiversity monitoring techniques.
