Sara Belelli

Sara Belelli is an Assistant Professor at Tuscia University of Viterbo (Italy) since 2022. She is currently working at a Research Project of National Interest (PRIN) on “Cultural interactions and language contacts: Iranian and non-Iranian languages in contact from the past to the present”. Between 2010 and 2012 she graduated with honours from a BA in “Languages and Cultures of Eurasia and the Mediterranean” at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy) with a thesis titled Tribalism and nomadism in Modern Iran: the case of the Il-e bakhtyāri, and from a MA in “Oriental Languages and Civilisations” with a specialisation in linguistics at L’Orientale University of Naples (Italy) with a thesis titled Southern Kurdish and the Kurdish varieties of Iran. In 2016, she was awarded a PhD in ‘Turkey, Iran and Central Asia’, in the academic discipline of Iranian Philology (L-OR/14) at ‘L’Orientale’ University of Naples (Italy), after completing a thesis titled A Study on Language and Folklore in the City of Harsin (Kermānshāh Province, West Iran): Sketch Grammar with Texts and Lexicon under the supervision of Prof. Adriano V. Rossi as doctoral advisor. A revised and enlarged version of this research work appeared in 2021 as a monograph titled The Laki variety of Harsin: Grammar, texts, lexicon in the series ‘Bamberg Studies in Kurdish Linguistics’ (BSKL), University of Bamberg Press, edited by Geoffrey Haig, Erik Anonby, Ergin Öpengin, and Ludwig Paul (https://fis.uni-bamberg.de/handle/uniba/51703). Her international experience includes study periods at SOAS University of London (UK), language training courses in Arabic, Persian, and Kurdish in Egypt, Iran and Germany respectively, as well as field research experiences in Tajikistan (2010, 4th Ethnolinguistic Mission in the Yaghnob Valley of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna/IsIAO), Kurdistan Region of Iraq (independent research, 2013), and Kermanshah Province of western Iran (independent research, 2013-2014). She participated in international conferences of Kurdish and Iranian Studies at Mardin Artuklu Üniversitesi (Turkey), Universiteit Van Amsterdam (Holland), Uppsala Universitet (Sweden), Université de Rouen-Normandie (France), Leiden University, Heidelberg University, among others. She participated as invited speakers at meetings on Kurdish linguistics and Contact linguistics at the Institute For Humanities and Cultural Studies (IHCS) of Tehran and the University of Cambridge, respectively. Since 2016 she collaborates as external expert with the team of the Atlas of the Languages of Iran (ALI) edited by Erik Anonby (Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada) and Mortaza Taheri Ardali (University of Shahrekord, Iran), carrying out activities of bibliographic record, data transcription and linguistic analysis of elicited samples from Southern Kurdish and Laki dialects. Between 2016 and 2022 she was involved as Postdoctoral Researcher in various projects related to the lexicography and lexicology of Northwestern Iranian languages (particularly Kurdish and Balochi) carried out at L’Orientale University of Naples and ISMEO (Associazione Internazionale di Studi sul Mediterraneo e l’Oriente/International Association for Mediterranean and Oriental Studies), among which the drafting of an Etymological-Comparative Dictionary of Balochi. She taught an introductory course of Central Kurdish (Sorani) at L’Orientale University, as well as basic Persian language courses in private institutions. She holds ordinary membership in ISMEO and SIG (Società Italiana di Glottologia/Italian Glottological Society). Her research interests cover various topics in the fields of dialectology, language documentation ad description, lexicography and lexicology, etymology, and oral literature of the Iranian area with a primary focus on Kurdish and closely related Northwest Iranian languages, as well as in the history of travel and travellers to the Middle East (Persia and Kurdistan).
