The main aim is to create a new hub for research and study of <strong>nuclear fusion<\/strong>. The aim of this project is to prepare <strong>a new generation<\/strong> of engineers with specific skills in this field, combining theoretical knowledge with practical training. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">The team responsible for nuclear fusion research has been operating since 2016 and is called <strong>UNITUS4FUSION<\/strong>. It currently has about 30 people, including Master Students, PhD students, Researchers and Professors. Most of the team was trained at the <strong>Tuscia University<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-63205 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG-20240731-WA0140_030420.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"851\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG-20240731-WA0140_030420.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG-20240731-WA0140_030420-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG-20240731-WA0140_030420-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG-20240731-WA0140_030420-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG-20240731-WA0140_030420-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 851px) 100vw, 851px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">But not only: TRUST can count on the collaboration of organizations and companies located throughout the country and beyond. The main partners are <strong>ENEA<\/strong>\u00ae (the national agency for new technologies to achieve sustainable development) and <strong>Tokamak Energy Ltd<\/strong>\u00ae(a British company that deals with the global development of nuclear energy). To these, we must add the collaborations with other important entities (<strong>ENI<\/strong>\u00ae, <strong>Walter Tosto S.p.A.<\/strong> \u00ae, <strong>OCEM S.R.L<\/strong>\u00ae and much others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-65602 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG-20240731-WA0137.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"793\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG-20240731-WA0137.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG-20240731-WA0137-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG-20240731-WA0137-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG-20240731-WA0137-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG-20240731-WA0137-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 793px) 100vw, 793px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"it-IT\"><b>Explanation of the work on the Tokamak<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">The TRUST project involves the creation of a small tokamak to test and study new nuclear technologies. Specifically, it plans to examine, in a flexible manner, <strong>innovative materials<\/strong> that resist the high thermal flux effects of this type of experiment. In addition, TRUST aims to test high-temperature superconducting materials (HTSs) for the production of coils and magnets needed to operate tokamaks. As regards the structure and operation of the experiment, the preliminary concept design appears defined and divided into four sub-assemblies: <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">a) the vacuum vessel (VV) and in-vessel components (IVC) system, <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">b) the cryostat system,<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">c) the poloidal magnetic field (PF) coils and the central solenoid modules (CS),<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">d) the toroidal field coil (TF) system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-65597 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Photo_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"757\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Photo_2.jpg 1202w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Photo_2-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Photo_2-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unitus.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Photo_2-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 757px) 100vw, 757px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">The TRUST project itself has <strong>three operational phases (OPs)<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">OP1. Testing and commissioning of all components, the entire copper magnetic system, testing of HTS coils in a dedicated test laboratory;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">OP2. Replacement of a copper PF coil with an HTS coil and study of different plasma scenarios and performance;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">OP3. Achievement of maximum performance and discharge of plasma in steady state conditions, all magnetic systems in HTS material, addition of a radio frequency system (ECRH) to support the discharge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"it-IT\">The OP1 has already been started in a new <strong>laboratory<\/strong>, where the feeding of copper and HTS coils is being tested. The laboratory currently includes an IGBT supercapacitor power supply (of 1200V and 600A) and a programmable DC power supply (40V and 120A).
