ABSTRACT\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
Cognitive decline, loss of muscle mass and strength, and alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota are chronic pathological traits related to aging that can be prevented or delayed with the Mediterranean diet. Hydroxytyrosol (HTyr) is a phenolic compound found in extra virgin olive oil that may exert a protective effect in several chronic age-associated diseases due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Recent results published by the research team have shown that HTyr has pro-neurogenic activity, stimulating the proliferation of stem and progenitor cells in neurogenic niches of the brain in aged mice and increasing the survival of newly produced neurons. This project aims to study in an animal model of aging the potential beneficial effects of oral treatment with HTyr and HTyr-enriched extracts obtained from the by-products of oil production through innovative and sustainable technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n In particular, the project is divided into the following WPs:<\/span><\/p>\n WP1.
