ABSTRACT <\/strong><\/p>\n

The reduction of chemical inputs in plant protection is a crucial goal for more sustainable agriculture. Preventive actions and alternative control strategies represent promising solutions to contain infestations by pests and pathogens. Given the economic importance of peach trees and the fact that Italy is the second-largest producer of peaches in the European Union, it is urgent to develop alternative strategies for their phytosanitary management. The IMPEACHMENT project involves two operating units, UNITUS and UNIMI, within a highly multidisciplinary framework. The project will focus on two critical issues: the invasive pest Halyomorpha halys (HH) and the disease known as twig cankers and shoot blight (TCSB). Among the most promising approaches are the new Decision Support Systems (DSS) based on mathematical models, which are grounded in a deep understanding of the life cycle of harmful agents. These models allow for both the prediction of their impact and the identification of the most vulnerable stages to target with focused phytosanitary treatments. Another effective strategy includes genetic improvement to obtain new resistant or tolerant varieties, as well as advances in genomics and plant\/pathogen interactions, and the use of Biological Control Agents (BCA) as a replacement for harmful agrochemicals. These tools are essential for preventing or reducing infestations and infections, allowing for the application of low-impact treatments only when and where necessary. All these elements will converge in a pilot study aimed at laying the foundations for an integrated control strategy based on three pillars: plant genetics, monitoring and modelling, and the use of biological control agents.<\/p>\n
